When looking into the Knights Templar pentacle and its significance, it becomes clear that the pentacle itself holds less importance than the story of the Knights Templar themselves.

Usually, a pentagram is a 5-pointed star with one point facing upwards and a circle around the star (connecting the points).
Sometimes, though, you’ll see a pentagram with two points facing upward (inverted pentacle).
Interestingly, what many call the Knights Templar pentacle has a history that goes back much farther than the Templar Order.
Some trace this symbol back to an ancient Goddess named Kore. The apple was Kore’s sacred fruit. When you cut an apple in half through the middle, a pentacle appears inside both halves, with seeds acting as the points on the star.

Throughout history since then, it can be shown that there have been many other uses of this symbol other than as the Knights Templar pentacle. Pythagoras used it in ancient Greece as a secret sign to his followers after they were driven underground. The pentacle is found in the old Gnostic religion in 4th century Egypt, the Old Testament shows it as the first of the Seven Seals, and it’s been thought to represent the first five books of the Torah.
In Christianity, the so-called Knights Templar pentacle has been known to represent the Star of Bethlehem, the five wounds of Christ, as a protective amulet, the five knightly virtues of Sir Gawain (King Arthur’s nephew), etc.
Satanists have used the inverted pentacle, or pentagram. Even heavy rock bands have used the pentagram as a symbol. This list goes on beyond the scope of this article. Suffice it to say that the Templar pentacle isn’t an exclusive Templar symbol.
KNIGHTS TEMPLAR PENTACLE: HISTORIC TEMPLAR OVERVIEW
The Knights Templar is the level a Freemason may advance to once he’s reached the Royal Arch Degree of the York Rite (see Freemasons Inside Secrets). This group was originally called the “Poor Knights of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon”, took oaths of poverty and obedience and were protectors of Holy Land pilgrims against the Muslims.
As time went on, the Knights Templar became more militaristic, secretive, and wealthy. It’s been estimated that by 1312 they owned around 9000 estates in Europe and had a goal to amass enough wealth to control the world. As they became more shrouded in secrecy and mystery, people began to become suspicious. The Knights Templar were thought to engage in occultism.
KNIGHTS TEMPLAR PENTACLE IN MASONIC ARCHITECTURE
Part of the Templar pentacle legend is the location of the 5-pointed star in many Masonic shrines and chapels, as well as the natural pentancle of mountains around Rennes du Chatres in France. By looking at Masonic and Templar architecture, it becomes quite clear that Freemasons took the mysticism of the Knights Templar pentacle very seriously.
