The public view of the 33rd Degree for Freemasons, or Shriners, is actually quite comical. They're the old guys in parades with the tasseled, red "fezzes" in little go-carts. They show up at football games and horse shows for fundraising. They've even been made light of in the Austin Powers' movie, "The Spy That Shagged Me".
They also have children's hospitals and burn centers for children. Many U.S. presidents have been Shriners, such as Franklin Roosevelt, Gerald Ford, and Harry Truman.

33RD DEGREE FOR FREEMASONS: WHERE'D THE MONEY GO?
In New World Order: The Ancient Plan of Secret Societies, William T. Still reports on the 1984 income statistics for the Shrine charities. Its assets were just under $2 billion as opposed to $1.07 billion and $446.8 million for the American Red Cross (ARC) and the American Cancer Society (ACS), respectively. However, the expenditure stats are telling: the ARC spent 84% of its 1984 income on program services, the ACS spent 67.2%, the American Heart Assoc. 70.6%, and the National Easter Seals 73%.
Now, how about the Shriners? Try 29.8%! Of the top fourteen charities that year, none gave less than 57% of income to program services. Wow, those Shriners, the 33rd degree for Freemasons, sure are charitable, aren't they?
The charitable aspect of the Shrine is a falsehood. More from Still's book:
- "The American Red Cross. spent four times as much money on its charitable programs in 1984 as the Shrine did - $781.9 million compared to the $189.2 million spent by the Shrine."
33RD DEGREE FOR FREEMASONS: MIDDLE EASTERN OCCULTISM
Freemasons would love to have you believe that the 33rd Degree for Freemasons level and rituals have nothing to do with eastern mysticism.
However, when you go to Washington, D.C., you'll stare in amazement at the female "Statue of Freedom" on top of the Capitol. Why? Because its back is to the country it supposedly represents. In which direction does this "freedom" figure face? The East.
How did this eastern philosophy find its way into the 33rd degree for Freemasons? William J. Florence, a Freemason, is credited with starting things off when an Arabian diplomat helped him into an eastern secret society. There have been accounts that Florence simply made up all the rituals for the Shrine, but the truth is the origin of the rituals comes from Middle Eastern Freemasonry.
Florence worked with Walter M. Fleming (NY doctor & Mason), Charles T. McClenachan, William Sleigh Paterson, and Albert L. Rawson (a Mason with further Arabic knowledge).
In his book, Still, expands for us on the eastern aspect of the Shrine, the 33rd Degree for Freemasons:
- "In the Masonic ritual, Masons travel from the West to the East in search of 'light', 'wisdom', or the 'lost word'. The Shriners' ritual states that certain individuals from the West went to Makkah (Mecca, Saudi Arabia) and received 'the secret work' and brought it back to America and established Shriners' Temples throughout the Western Hemisphere.
Masonry in general, and the Shriners in particular, worship the East for a reason: despite all their protestations to the contrary, theirs is nothing more than an American adaptation of Middle-Eastern Masonry. The mystical references to the 'East' that run through not only the Shrine, but through the rituals of Masonry and its relatively benign women's division, the Order of the Eastern Star, refer to this Middle-Eastern tradition which looks toward Mecca, as a Catholic looks toward Rome."
